Safety when travelling in and around Rosebank

Area overview

• Rosebank is a cosmopolitan commercial and residential suburb to the north of central Johannesburg, South Africa.
• Rosebank is located in Region B of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality and is home to several businesses, residential areas and schools as well as a Gautrain station and two malls, Rosebank Mall and The Zone.


In the street

• Avoid unnecessary or ostentatious displays of expensive jewellery, cameras and other valuables.
• Do not carry large sums of money around.
• At night, steer clear of dark, isolated areas.
• It is better to explore in groups and to stick to well-lit, busy streets.


Cellphone snatching

• Don’t text or hold your phone out while walking.
• Don’t leave your phone out on the table when at a bar, cafe or a restaurant.
• Avoid wearing headphones when in public – stay alert to your surroundings.
• If you are waiting for your e-hailing service, remember the numberplate details and put your phone away.


Public transport

• Wherever possible, make use of e-hailing services such as Uber or Bolt as opposed to regular taxis or metered taxis.
• Ensure the vehicle and driver requested, match the details that display in the e-hailing app.
• Women are advised not to travel alone when making use of any public transport.
• If possible, rather make use of company-arranged transport.


Train

• The Gautrain is a quick and efficient way to travel around Gauteng and runs between Pretoria, Centurion, Midrand, Sandton, Marlboro, Park Station and OR Tambo International Airport.
• The Rosebank Gautrain station is less than 300m from the Anglo American Rosebank Office at 144 Oxford.
