Creating hope through action – Suicide Prevention.

The 10th of September is globally observed as World Suicide Day. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) suicide is a major public health problem that can and usually has long-lasting effects on individuals, families and communities. According to the South African Association of Psychiatrists (SASOP) there are an estimated 23 suicides and 230 severe suicide attempts in South Africa each day.

By raising awareness, reducing the stigma around suicide, and encouraging well-informed action, we can reduce instances of suicide. around the world. By creating hope through action, sharing knowledge and by offering assistance we can signal to people experiencing suicidal thoughts that there is hope and that we care and want to support them. It also recognisessuggests that our actions, no matter how big or small, may provide a lifelinehope to those who are struggling.

Preventing suicide requires strategies at all levels of society, which include prevention and protective strategies for individuals, families and communities.
Everyone can help prevent suicide by learning the warning signs, promoting prevention, resilience and committing to social change.
