#1 Understanding Fire Safety – Fire safety and prevention

Think about it

  • Fires are preventable and it is important to reduce the likelihood of exposure to, or loss of, flammable or combustible substances by application of engineered and procedural controls, informed by a robust risk assessment.
  • The consequence of fire is best minimised by early detection systems – for eg. heat, smoke, vapours or flammable atmospheres – with the means to suppress any starting fire.
  • Maintaining good housekeeping minimises the accumulation of materials that can fuel a fire.
  • Maintain all life-safety devices (eg. smoke alarms) to prevent fatalities in the event of a fire.
  • Ensure sources of ignition and all flammable liquids are properly stored and kept in minimum quantities.
  • Regularly inspect electronics, electrical equipment and outlets and report defects immediately.
